7-Day Zanzibar Itinerary: Stone Town and the Beaches

A week is enough for history, a beach base and a few trips. It is not enough to move hotels every morning and still call it a holiday.

For seven days in Zanzibar, spend the first one or two nights in Stone Town and the rest in one beach area. That leaves time for the island without spending your holiday watching luggage disappear into taxi boots. If your flight arrives late, count the next morning as your real first day.

This route works for a first visit and can be adjusted to your season, tides and interests. It is not a list of compulsory excursions. The beach guide helps you choose between Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani and quieter areas before you book a hotel. Choose the coast first; then fill the days around it.

Do not interpret this as seven full sightseeing days. Arrival and departure take real time. If you have only six nights, reduce Stone Town to one night or pick a beach close to the activities you most want. The best itinerary is one that survives the flight schedule.

Days 1 and 2: start in Stone Town

After arrival, keep the plan modest. Walk to the waterfront, find dinner and learn the lanes near your hotel. Stone Town is a living city, not an outdoor museum built for your camera. The UNESCO World Heritage listing describes its mix of African, Arab, Indian and European influences. A local guide can help connect the architecture to the people and history behind it.

On the second day, visit Darajani Market, explore the old streets and make time for sites that explain Zanzibar's trading and slavery history. Give these places more attention than a quick photo stop. Leave space for a café, an unexpected shop or simply getting a little lost and finding your way back.

Our Stone Town walking guide gives a more detailed plan. If you arrive after a long international journey, staying overnight in town may also spare you a late cross-island drive.

Days 3 to 5: move to one beach base

Choose your hotel before selecting excursions. Nungwi and Kendwa suit travellers who place easy beach time high on the list. Paje and Jambiani suit longer walks, a changing lagoon and a different atmosphere. Matemwe is quieter and can be useful for boat trips near Mnemba. Each coast has trade-offs; none is the single “best Zanzibar beach” for every visitor.

Travel to the beach on day three and leave the rest of the day open. On day four, learn how the tide behaves outside your hotel. On much of the east coast, a low tide can move the swimmable water far from shore. Our tides guide explains why this matters. A hotel pool is a perfectly respectable backup plan.

Use day five for one well-chosen activity if the sea and weather allow. Compare departure coast, hotel pickup, group size and what is included before choosing a snorkelling or boat trip. Our Zanzibar activities guide lists bookable options. “Island tour” can mean very different amounts of time on the water.

Days 6 and 7: keep a little freedom

Leave day six flexible. You might want a second sea day, a spice farm, another walk through a nearby village or nothing more ambitious than lunch that lasts a suspiciously long time. Weather and tide can move a boat trip, so an open day makes the week easier.

On departure day, check driving time from your hotel to the airport and the airline's check-in instructions. From the far north or south-east, do not assume the transfer is a quick hop. If your international flight is early, consider spending the final night closer to Stone Town or the airport. Our arrival and transport guide covers airport and ferry choices.

Which coast should you choose for a week?

North and north-west: Nungwi and Kendwa are useful if swimming, sunsets and a choice of places to eat are priorities. They can be busy, and the exact hotel stretch matters. East and south-east: Paje, Jambiani and nearby villages offer long beach walks and a more visible tidal rhythm. Paje is lively around kite schools; Jambiani can feel slower.

If you cannot decide, look at recent hotel reviews for the precise beach access and road location. “Close to the beach” on a map may involve a different walk from the one you imagined. Our Zanzibar hotel shortlist can help you compare stays across areas.

Small choices that improve the whole week

  • Book only one or two activities before arrival, then leave room for conditions.
  • Check the actual meeting point for every boat trip; pickup from your coast may not be included.
  • Recheck official travel and insurance requirements near departure.
  • Bring respectful clothing for town and village visits, separate from beachwear.
  • Do not try to visit every famous beach by changing hotels each day.

If your Zanzibar week follows a mainland safari, count the transfer day honestly. The 10-day Tanzania itinerary shows how the safari and coast can fit together without pretending an airport lounge is a destination.

Frequently asked questions

Is seven days enough for Zanzibar?

Yes. A week is enough for Stone Town, one beach base and selected activities if you do not change hotels constantly.

How many nights should I spend in Stone Town?

One or two nights work well for a first visit. Stay longer if history and city life matter more to you than beach time.

Should I stay in Nungwi or Paje?

Choose Nungwi for easier swimming and a busier north-coast base. Choose Paje for kite culture, long walks and a pronounced east-coast tide.

Can I visit Zanzibar without booking tours?

Yes. Stone Town walks and beach time can fill a week. Tours are optional, although a good local guide can add context to heritage sites.

What is the best order for Stone Town and beach?

Stone Town first is convenient after arrival, then settle at the beach. Reverse it if your flight times or ferry connection make that easier.

How do Zanzibar tides affect an itinerary?

East-coast swimming and boat departures can depend on tide times. Check local forecasts and leave a flexible day for weather changes.

Can I add a safari to a seven-day Zanzibar trip?

You can, but a fly-in safari uses at least a substantial travel day. Decide whether that is worth giving up beach or Stone Town time.
