10 Days in Tanzania: A Safari and Zanzibar Itinerary

Ten days can cover the northern parks and a short beach stay, but only if you give transfers an honest place in the plan.

For a first trip, ten days is enough for a northern-circuit safari and a taste of Zanzibar. It is not enough to see every park, climb Kilimanjaro and take a long beach break too. Give each travel day a job and the trip starts to feel like a holiday rather than a relay race.

This example starts near Arusha, visits Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, then flies to Zanzibar. It assumes sensible flight connections and a tour operator who can confirm the exact route. The order can change with your flight times, camp locations and season. Treat it as a framework, not a promise that every drive takes the same number of hours.

That gives you several safari days and roughly two full days on Zanzibar. If the beach is your main reason for travelling, cut a park rather than pretending transfers do not exist.

Days 1 to 3: arrive, Tarangire and Ngorongoro

Day 1: land near Arusha

Most northern-circuit trips start around Arusha after arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Keep this as an arrival day. Delayed flights and luggage take the fun out of a rushed game drive. Choose a hotel that makes the next morning's pickup easy, eat and sleep.

Day 2: Tarangire

Head to Tarangire for your first proper wildlife day. In drier months, the river can draw animals from surrounding areas. The park is known for elephants and baobabs, but sightings always depend on the day. Confirm how much time you will have in the park after the drive from Arusha and where you sleep that night.

Day 3: Ngorongoro area

Travel towards Karatu or the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on the route, this can be the day for a crater descent, or you may do the descent on the following morning and adjust the Serengeti transfer. A crater visit involves separate rules and fees, so make sure it is written into the itinerary rather than described vaguely as “Ngorongoro”.

Karatu can be a practical overnight base. A crater-rim lodge reduces some travel but can cost much more. Our Ngorongoro lodge guide explains the trade-off.

Days 4 to 6: give the Serengeti room to breathe

Day 4 is the transition into the Serengeti. From Karatu, this is not a quick hop. Your route may cross the Ngorongoro highlands and enter a different part of the Serengeti depending on season. Ask where the camp is, when you expect to arrive and how much wildlife time is realistic along the way.

Keep days 5 and 6 as full safari days. This is where the itinerary earns its long transfer. Your guide can plan around recent wildlife movements, the camp's location and road conditions. If migration is the priority, camp location matters more than simply having “Serengeti” in the trip title. Compare Serengeti safari options with that in mind.

Do not fill every hour with another activity. Early starts and bumpy roads are tiring. A slower afternoon can make the next dawn drive much better.

Days 7 to 10: fly to Zanzibar and slow down

Day 7: travel to the island

A flight from the Serengeti region to Zanzibar saves a long return drive, but schedules and baggage rules vary by airline and airstrip. Confirm the exact departure point, connection, baggage allowance and hotel transfer before booking both the safari and the beach hotel. This is mainly a travel day, even when the view from the plane is lovely.

Days 8 and 9: choose your coast

Spend two full days on Zanzibar. For easy swimming and sunsets, consider Nungwi or Kendwa. For kitesurfing and cafés, Paje is a stronger fit. East-coast tides can move the sea a long way from your hotel at low tide, so read our Zanzibar beach guide before choosing a room.

One boat trip or Stone Town visit is plenty in this short window. You do not have to schedule every afternoon just because an excursion menu exists.

Day 10: depart

Leave enough time for the airport transfer and any international connection. If your flight departs from the mainland rather than Zanzibar, check how you will get there. A same-day domestic connection can be convenient, but it needs sensible buffer time.

How to change this itinerary

If you care most about safari, keep day 7 on the mainland and fly to Zanzibar on day 8. If you want a longer beach break, drop Tarangire or shorten the Serengeti section rather than stealing a little time from every stop. If your trip falls in the southern Serengeti calving season, your guide may suggest a different camp area and order.

Families and travellers who dislike long drives may prefer a fly-in safari or fewer parks. That can raise the price but improve the holiday. There is no prize for seeing the most park signs in ten days.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough for Tanzania and Zanzibar?

Yes, for a focused northern safari and a short Zanzibar stay. It is not enough for every major park plus a long beach holiday.

How many safari days should I plan in 10 days?

This example uses several wildlife days and roughly two full beach days. Shift a day towards the safari or coast based on your priority.

Can I drive from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?

No. Zanzibar is an island. A flight is normally the practical connection after a northern safari; check the airstrip and schedule.

Should I visit Tarangire and Ngorongoro in one itinerary?

They can work together, but do not rush both on the same day. Check park time, drive time and whether a crater descent is included.

Where should I stay in Zanzibar after a safari?

Kendwa and Nungwi suit travellers who want easier swimming and sunsets. Paje suits kitesurfing and cafés. Check the exact hotel location and tide.

Is it better to do the safari before Zanzibar?

Many travellers like finishing at the beach. The best order also depends on international flights, domestic connections and camp availability.

What does a 10-day Tanzania itinerary cost?

There is no single price. Park fees, accommodation, group size and the Serengeti to Zanzibar flight make a large difference. Compare complete written quotes.
