Before you book the safari camp, check the documents that will actually get you onto the plane. Passport validity, visa rules, travel insurance and health advice can change, and they do not apply identically to every passport or flight route.

This guide was reviewed on 13 October 2026. It is a starting checklist, not an immigration decision or medical advice. Tanzania includes the mainland and Zanzibar, but Zanzibar has had its own inbound insurance process, and mainland insurance rules changed in October 2026. Use the official links below for your exact nationality and itinerary before paying for anything non-refundable.

Tanzania entry checklist

  • Passport: check at least six months' validity and an unused visa page against Tanzania Immigration's eVisa guidance.
  • Visa: verify whether your nationality needs one and which application route applies. Use the official immigration portal, not an advert that looks official.
  • Mandatory inbound insurance: check the current rules for mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar and a trip that includes both.
  • Health: discuss malaria prevention and vaccinations with a qualified travel-health professional. Check yellow-fever certificate rules for every country in your route.
  • Journey: keep onward travel, accommodation details and travel documents handy in case your airline or border officer asks.

A single screenshot of someone else's visa approval does not settle your case. Passport nationality and transit history matter.

Passport and visa requirements

The official Tanzania eVisa guidelines say applicants should have a passport valid for at least six months and at least one unused visa page. Check the precise rule again before applying and before flying. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it before booking a hard-to-change trip.

Visa requirements depend on nationality, purpose and length of stay. Some passports qualify for visa-free entry; others can apply online or may be eligible on arrival; some require additional approval in advance. The official Tanzania eVisa portal lists categories and the application process. Apply through that site if an eVisa is right for you, and keep your confirmation accessible offline.

A visa is not the same as a permit to work or volunteer. If your trip includes anything beyond tourism, confirm the correct category with Immigration rather than guessing at the airport.

Do you need mandatory travel insurance?

Yes, this is a check that should not be left until the boarding gate. Zanzibar introduced a mandatory inbound travel insurance scheme for many foreign visitors. In October 2026, mainland Tanzania also introduced mandatory inbound travel insurance for foreign visitors. The Tanzania Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcement explains the mainland change.

For Zanzibar, start with the official Zanzibar inbound insurance portal. For mainland entry, consult the official NIC inbound insurance portal and current government guidance. If you travel to both mainland and Zanzibar, confirm how a policy is recognised across the two parts of the trip before buying or assuming you need two separate policies. Rules and exemptions can change.

This mandatory cover is an entry requirement, not automatically a substitute for a broader travel policy. Check your medical evacuation, cancellation, baggage and activity cover separately, especially for safari or climbing.

Vaccines, yellow fever and malaria

Yellow-fever entry rules depend on your travel route, not just your final destination. The CDC Tanzania traveller page says a certificate may be required after travel from a yellow-fever-risk country, including some long airport transits. Direct arrivals from countries without that risk are different. Check your full flight itinerary with an official health source and your airline.

The CDC also advises travellers to consider malaria prevention and routine or travel-specific vaccines with a clinician. Recommendations depend on age, health, activities and where you will go. Book a travel-health appointment with enough time to act on the advice. A beach stay is not a reason to skip the conversation.

Do not rely on a single universal checklist

A traveller flying directly from Europe, another arriving after time in a yellow-fever-risk country and a resident returning home may face different document checks. Match the guidance to your own journey.

What to have ready at the airport

Carry your passport, visa approval if applicable, insurance certificate or QR code, return or onward itinerary and first-night accommodation details in a form you can access without mobile data. Keep digital copies somewhere secure and a paper backup for the most important documents. Check that names and passport numbers match every booking.

Domestic flights between the mainland and Zanzibar may have tighter baggage rules than your international flight. This is not an immigration issue, but discovering it with a safari duffel at check-in is nobody's favourite start to a beach holiday.

Check official government travel advice from your own country before departure too. It may cover current security, local laws and practical information that a tourism site should not paraphrase as a guarantee.
