world Zanzibar conjures memories of history dating back to the 1st century AD.
Recorded history shows that the Greeks first mention of the island was done in
the Periplus of the Erythrean (Red) Sea. Early visitors to the Isles came from
as far as China, the Far East, the Indian Sub-continent Persia and North Africa.
It was the Portuguese and the British who opened Zanzibar to the rest
of the world. All these foreigners wee brought to Zanzibar for trade-ranging from
slavery, gold, ivory, spices and - the wish to colonise. Zanzibar is are a friendly
people cheerful and very much outgoing, Though Kiswahili is the lingua-franca,
English is widely spoken.
