Northern
Tanzania encompasses the Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions. This area has the largest
concentration and variety of wildlife in the country. Here also exist some of
the most prominent geological formations in Tanzania. From the peaks of Kilimanjaro
to the plains of the Serengeti, one passes through waterfalls, lakes, rivers,
mountains, valleys and volcanoes. The two principal towns are Moshi and Arusha.
Kilimanjaro
region spreads from the start of the Usambara Mountain Range moving west to the
Kilimanjaro International Airport. The mountain forms the backdrop of Moshi town.
It is the principal center for the Tanzania coffee industry and the hub of the
mountain climbing business. The principal tribe that inhabit the area are the
Chagga. Moshi's fertile volcanic soil and 900 meters altitude make it idea land
for coffee, sisal, wheat, sugar and a host of horticultural products. The Kilimanjaro
International Airport is 35 kms west of Moshi town. It also has a medical entre
known as the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and the College of African Wildlife
Management. |
